Lectio Divina

How It Works

Lectio Divina ("Divine Reading") is an ancient practice of praying through Scripture. Rather than reading to gain more information, we read slowly and prayerfully, allowing God's Word to shape and transform us.

Instead of rushing through a passage, we become still, listen for God's voice, and respond to what he is saying.

The four movements of Lectio Divina are:

  • Read (Lectio): Read the passage slowly and attentively.

  • Reflect (Meditatio): Notice what stands out and meditate on its meaning.

  • Respond (Oratio): Talk with God about what you've read.

  • Rest (Contemplatio): Quietly remain in God's presence and receive his love.

Lectio Divina invites us to read with both our minds and our hearts, creating space for God to transform us through his Word.

4 Movements of Lectio

1. Read (Lectio)

• Read the scripture aloud once through without stopping.
• Don't merely think.
• Take time to listen.
• Notice a phrase or two.

2. Reflect (Meditatio)

• Read the scripture aloud a second time.
• Notice anything that captures your attention.
• Begin to ask...
• What is this saying?
• What does this mean?

3. Respond (Oratio)

• Read the scripture aloud a third time.
• Notice what happens in your heart as you read.
• What do you feel?
• What are your hopes, desires, requests?
• Respond naturally to the passage in the context of relationship.

4. Rest (Contemplatio)

• Take a few moments to be with God.
• Rest in his loving presence.
• No agenda.
• Just relationship.
• Let God enjoy your presence as you enjoy his. Remember to take your time with this. Give yourself space to breathe between each movement

How to Select Scripture

We recommend practicing Lectio Divina by slowly reading through Jesus' Upper Room Discourse in small sections. Rather than rushing through the passage, spend time each day with these small sections of scripture, allowing God's Spirit to speak through his Word.
